My Favorite Game

When I was a kid, I used to drive myself crazy every time I had a decently long break from school. Here’s how: Just as soon as the break started, I would think, “This is great now, but I know that I will be looking back on this moment once I’m back in school. No matter how long, fun, and relaxing this break is, it will happen. It will end. That always annoyed me, not just because it was a terrible attitude, but because I was right every time!

These days, I try to use that same game to my advantage. I can’t count the times I’ve thought something like this during a particularly tough skate: “This hurts now, but no matter how hard, painful, and long it is, I know that I will be looking back on it tonight. I’ll laugh at it too, because it will end.” You might know this as “This too shall pass.” So far, that’s always been true. If you’re going through something tough right now, maybe you should try playing this game, because it will end, and you will be the one who endured. 🙂
